Hurricane Erin Expected To Restrengthen After Downgrading To Category 3

In a rapid intensification, Hurricane Erin transformed into a powerful Category 5 storm Saturday, but by Sunday morning, its winds had decreased to 125 mph to reclassify as a Category 3. However, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is now saying that the hurricane will likely restrengthen over the next few days.

Located around 235 miles from San Juan, Puerto Rico and 200 miles from Grand Turk Island, it’s expected that the core of Erin will pass both the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeastern Bahamas throughout Sunday night and Monday.

Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are experiencing heavy rains and gusty winds due to the outer rainbands from Hurricane Erin.

At around 13 mph, Erin is headed towards the west-northwest. It’s expected that the storm will gradually take a northern turn Monday and Tuesday, per the NHC.

The expectation for Monday is that Erin’s core will be east of the Bahamas, and then, mid-week, it will be roughly in the center of Bermuda and the United States east coast, according to the hurricane center.

Over the next several days, Erin will impact the Bahamas, a strong portion of the U.S. east coast, Bermuda and Atlantic Canada with life-threatening rip currents and surf.

Residents of the North Carolina Outer Banks and Bermuda are advised to monitor Erin as strong winds could potentially come from the hurricane‘s outer bands mid-week.
