‘I Follow God, I Don’t Follow Man’: Denzel Washington Shares Thoughts On Cancel Culture

Denzel Washington isn’t concerned about cancel culture — and he’s making that clear while promoting his latest film.

In an interview with Complex News alongside Spike Lee to discuss their new movie Highest 2 Lowest, Washington was asked if he was worried about being canceled. The Oscar-winning actor dismissed the idea entirely.

“Who cares? What made public support so important to begin with?” Washington said, according to Complex. “You can’t lead and follow at the same time, and you can’t follow and lead at the same time.” (RELATED: Some Of Hollywood’s Biggest Names Are Turning Away From Depravity, Towards Jesus)

The actor went on to say he follows only his faith. “I follow God, I don’t follow man,” he said. “You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up. Don’t sign up.”

Washington’s press run has included several viral soundbites. In a separate interview with Jake’s Takes, he downplayed the importance of Hollywood awards. “I don’t do it for Oscars. I really don’t care about that kind of stuff,” he said, according to Complex. “Man gives the award. God gives the reward.”

On ESPN, Washington also weighed in on sports media, criticizing what he called “opinionaires.” “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, talk about those who can,” he said. “Those who have know what they’re talking about. Those who haven’t don’t. Period.”

Washington and Lee’s new project Highest 2 Lowest marks another collaboration between the director and the actor, whose partnership has spanned decades.
