Federal immigration agents in Maryland shot at a driver who tried to run them over Wednesday morning, police said.
Anne Arundel County Police said officers responded to the 500 block of West Court in Glen Burnie shortly before 11 a.m. after two people were injured in the chaotic scene.
The Department of Homeland Security said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were carrying out an enforcement operation in the area when they spotted two illegal immigrants in a white van — Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, a Portuguese national who was driving, and Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel, a Salvadoran national who was in the passenger seat.
The agency said officers approached the vehicle and told Mr. Sousa-Martins to turn off his engine.
“The driver refused and attempted to flee, then weaponized his vehicle and began ramming his van into several ICE vehicles,” the agency said. “He then drove his van directly at ICE officers, attempting to run them over.”
The ICE agents opened fire on the vehicle and hit Mr. Sousa-Martins, the DHS said.
The agency said the wounded driver then crashed into a wooded area behind a row of homes, which left Mr. Serrano-Esquivel injured.
Local police said both people were taken to area hospitals for treatment and are expected to survive.
“I am aware of the ICE-involved shooting that occurred earlier today in Glen Burnie,” Gov. Wes Moore wrote on X. “As information surrounding the incident continues to emerge, we will remain in touch with local officials and are standing by to provide support for the community.”
Anne Arundel County police and the FBI are investigating the shooting.
