A federal immigration enforcement operation in suburban Chicago turned violent on Friday when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer was injured and a suspect killed during a traffic stop, according to federal authorities.
The incident occurred in Franklin Park, located west of Chicago, during an attempt to apprehend Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the ICE officer sustained multiple injuries after allegedly being dragged by the suspect’s vehicle as he tried to flee.
The officer, whose name has not been released, is reported to be in stable condition.
Officials confirmed that Villegas-Gonzalez was fatally shot during the encounter.
DHS said the shooting occurred after he refused to comply with orders and drove his car toward ICE agents.
The officer who was struck then fired his weapon, killing the suspect.

This Could Be the Most Important Video Gun Owners Watch All Year
Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin released a statement Friday following the incident.
“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement,” McLaughlin said.
She added that online rhetoric encouraging migrants to resist law enforcement posed risks.
“Viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement not only spread misinformation, but also undermine public safety, as well as the safety of our officers and those being apprehended.”

Family members of Villegas-Gonzalez told ABC7 Chicago that he was a father who had lived in the United States for decades and worked at a restaurant in the city’s Portage Park neighborhood.
His stepdaughter remembered him as someone who “respected people” and said, “I will miss him, and I hope he’s resting now.”
The incident comes as ICE has expanded its presence in northern Illinois.
Reports indicate that more than 300 agents have been deployed to the region as part of ongoing enforcement operations.
The shooting drew swift reactions from community groups and activists. Marien Casillas Pabellon of the PASO West Suburban Action Project told ABC7, “Today, we don’t feel safe. In a long long time, we don’t feel safe anymore. There is no reason why you are on the street, somebody stops you, and you are losing your life for it. Let me tell you, we are not going to live in the shadows anymore. There is no way we are going back to that. So, ICE needs to get out.”
Laurence Benito of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights also condemned the operation.
“The Trump and deportation machine is out of control, and operating with no transparency and accountability, and leading to senseless harm to our communities, families and neighbors,” Benito said.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker posted on X Friday afternoon that he had been briefed on the incident.
“I am aware of the troubling incident that has unfolded in Franklin Park. This is a developing situation and the people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what’s happened today to ensure transparency and accountability,” he wrote.
