President Trump aimed to paint the economy in a good light as he spoke at the American Business Forum in Miami on Wednesday.
Mr. Trump noted that he was speaking at the forum on the first anniversary of his 2024 presidential election win, saying the United States is in a “golden age.”
“We have the greatest economy right now,” Mr. Trump said at Miami’s Kaseya Center. “A lot of people don’t see that.”
Attendees and speakers included recent Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado, star athletes such as Lionel Messi, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, top business executives and others.
He referenced the stock market rising and job creation numbers, along with the money he has brought into the country through trade deals made with other countries.
“This is really a transition period. We went from a horrible, failed country to a tremendous success,” he said.
“These are the things you have to talk about,” Mr. Trump said. “If people don’t talk about them, then you can do not so well in elections.”
His speech came after Democrats had election wins in New Jersey, Virginia, New York City and California, and polls showed that economic concerns were at the forefront of voters’ minds when they hit the polls.
He railed against former President Biden for inflation and egg prices.
“We got them down to the level they originally were a long time ago, and we have that in just about everything,” he said. “And if we don’t have it, we get them down.”
He referenced high grocery and mortgage prices, but said under his administration those will come down, saying Americans soon will see $2 per gallon gasoline, and referenced Walmart cutting prices for Thanksgiving staple dishes.
He even pointed to lower interest rates despite having a “nincompoop” at the Federal Reserve, namely Fed Chair Jerome Powell.
“Day by day, we’re making America affordable again,” he said. “It’s going to be affordable again at a really record pace.”
He said Democrats in Congress are holding the “American people hostage in an effort to extort hundreds of billions of dollars in new spending.”
“As we speak, the Democrats in Congress are trying to put all of this progress at risk and drag us back to the Biden policies of soaring prices, crushing energy costs, massive spending, open borders — let the world come into our country from prisons and from mental institutions, let them pour in — and rampant inflation,” he said.
He spoke highly of advancements in artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency, and criticized his predecessor for having crypto “under siege.”
“From day one of my administration I’ve been fighting every single day to turn around the catastrophe we inherited, to make America the best place on the planet Earth to do business, and that’s what it is,” he said.
The event was primarily funded by the Public Investment Fund, which is Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Mr. Trump gave a shout out to Saudi ambassador to Washington, Princess Reema Bandar al-Saud who was present at the speech.
He spoke of his prized first term foreign-policy achievement, the Abraham Accords, and said he hopes Saudi Arabia will soon join other Arab states in making peace with Israel.
He added jokingly, “I’m not saying that, I’m not lobbying.”
