Welcome back to State of the Day, where I burn the euphemism and misdirection off the day’s news and give it to you straight, like sun-bleached bones.

Everything about this tweet is perfect, from who shared it, to who’s talking, to what’s actually said.

The Bulwark is the latest and probably sleekest iteration of Principled Never Trump Intellectualism that essentially dresses liberal fever dreams in coiffed conservatism and sells it right back to liberals as right wing allyship + gay pookashell necklaces on gay MSNBC.

(lol, the failed Jeb Bush campaign’s worst legacy was giving us The Bulwark’s Tim Miller in all his smarmy, I’m-better-than-you glory.)

In a tweet, The Bulwark is boosting former CIA spook-turned supposedly moderate savior of the Democrat Party, Sen. Elissa Slotkin. I truly can’t get over how perfect she appears to be to a political left reeling from its own excesses. CIA analyst. Tours to Iraq. Childless and divorced. Look for her to run as a “real combat veteran” against Vance.

The main trouble for everyone involved is she’s still captured by the same delusional inversion as the rest of the party. She, like the Bulwark is to Rational Never Trump Conservatism, is just a cleaner, speed-limit version of all the same foolishness facing the party.

She’s just liberal mass hysteria at a resting heart rate.

Starting with the obvious: Here she is saying Trump is preparing to never leave office. We’ve heard this before. Trump will demand loyalty and consolidate power. Trump will use it against his political enemies. Trump is an “authoritarian.” When the “tipping point” comes, he’ll pull out all stops to stay in power.

Again, we’ve heard all this before. What’s more, we’ve actually seen it in action, except not from Trump.

It was Democrats who set up a sprawling, multinational censorship, surveillance and suppression apparatus. It was Democrats who attempted to ban certain questions under penalty of financial and reputational ruin. It was Democrats who formed and funded domestic paramilitary groups, and Democrats who looked the other way as those groups routinely assaulted common conservatives in the streets. It was Democrats who investigated, probed and arrested conservatives, big and small, on trumped up charges. It was Democrats who throttled loyal members of the judiciary in order to summarily subvert the Democratic process. It was Democrats who abused power to remove Trump’s name from ballots. It was Democrats who turned the tools of the intelligence community and the Justice Department on their own countrymen, to map and suppress not just official party opposition but even wine moms running Pro-Trump Facebook pages.

And now, when conservatives fight back, when they seek actual justice for the injustices they’ve suffered, it’s Democrats howling about all the above.

I’m sorry, folks, but facing the consequences of your actions is not persecution.

I know I’m not your real dad, but nevertheless, you’re grounded.

Now go to your room and think about what you’ve done.
