Israeli Airstrike Takes Out Top Iranian Intel Chief, Officials Say

An Israeli airstrike killed Major General Seyed Majid Khademi, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) intelligence chief, on Monday, according to Israel’s defense minister and Iranian state media.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said his country’s forces had targeted the intel chief in a statement, DW reported. The IRGC Public Relations Department announced Khademi was “martyred” in an attack Monday, according to Iranian state media Press TV. Katz referred to Khademi as one of the IRGC’s three main leaders, The New York Times (NYT) reported.

“The Revolutionary Guards are shooting at civilians and we are eliminating the leaders of the terrorists,” said Katz, according to DW. “Iran’s leaders live with a sense of being targeted. We will continue to hunt them down one by one.” (RELATED: US Rescues Second Crew Member From Jet Downed In Iran, Trump Says)

Major Gemeral Amir Hatami, commander-in-chief of Iran’s regular army, claimed such strikes would fail to dampen the “spirit of resistance of the proud Iranian nation,” Press TV reported.

The general was one of multiple Iranian officials who held a post for merely a few months as Israel has prioritized taking out senior officials, military leaders and nuclear scientists, according to the NYT. The deadly strike came over a month after the U.S. and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury against Iran on Feb. 28.
