Democratic strategist James Carville on Wednesday lost his temper after his podcast co-host Al Hunt mentioned President Donald Trump’s recent support of raising taxes on the wealthy.
Trump said during a May 9 Oval Office press conference that he “would love to” slightly raise taxes on the rich, though he acknowledged it likely would not make it into his “big, beautiful” budget bill. During a discussion of the bill on “Politics War Room,” Hunt brought up Trump’s vocal support for the tax hike, prompting Carville to erupt. “Remember all the talk from Trump a couple weeks ago — ‘Well, maybe we ought to tax the rich more’?” Hunt asked, asserting it was no longer under consideration.
“He doesn’t mean that … And then they say, ‘Oh, well yeah, at least Trump is willing to do—’ and he’s not,” Carville said. “I mean, every — that’s like the prescription drug — it’s all bullshit — everything is bullshit. There’s nothing that’s not.”
Carville appeared to be referring to Trump’s Monday executive order that the president asserted will reduce drug prices by 59% or more.
“We got to learn to quit chasing this. I mean, you’ve covered Washington …There’s no way,” Carville added. “And of course now you got [Republican Missouri Sen.] Josh Hawley saying no way to cut Medicaid … I mean, what are they gon’ do?”
Hawley in a May 12 New York Times op-ed criticized fellow Republican lawmakers’ efforts to cut Medicaid funding, calling the move “morally wrong” and “politically suicidal” amid ongoing budget reconciliation negotiations.
Major legacy media publications did not portray Trump’s executive order on prescription drugs as a positive development.
The New York Times’ Monday headline on the order was “With No Real Policy, Trump Asks Drugmakers to Lower U.S. Prices.” NPR’s headline the same day was “Trump signs an order to reduce drug prices, but it’s unclear how it would work.”
Political analyst Mark Halperin argued Wednesday on “The Charlie Kirk Show” that if former President Barack Obama had taken similar action against the pharmaceutical industry to Trump’s executive order, the press would have hailed him as “a hero.”
Carville has frequently grown erratic while criticizing Trump since he became president again in January.
For instance, on March 4, Carville told CNN host Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room” that he was so agitated with the Trump administration’s economic policy that he was struggling to stop himself from “punching” his computer.
“Wolf, I’m trying to take a deep breath here so that I don’t come out of my chair and start punching my computer. But as I recall, when he ran, he was going to bring grocery prices down from day one,” Carville said. “And he was going to give relief to the American consumer … What are we, six weeks into this? Maybe not even that. And now he said, ‘Well, you might have to pay more, but it’s good for your country.’ Did anybody ever hear that?”
