After last night’s Labour U-turn on making Digital ID compulsory, the government is looking increasingly farcical with the sheer volume of policy reversals. It’s now up to thirteen. Comfortably past Starmer’s own benchmark for “serial incompetence”…
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander was sent out to defend the government this morning. The latest excuse for so many U-turns is that “some of those weren’t even in our manifesto”. She told Sky News:
“I don’t accept that this government has done 13 U-turns. You know, some of those things that people are claiming weren’t even in our manifesto.”
Guido thought to provide Alexander with a reminder list of U-turns:
- Grooming gangs inquiry
- Two-child benefit cap
- Waspi Women compensation
- Winter fuel payment cuts
- Trans rights
- How the government measures debt
- Benefit cuts
- National insurance increase
- Freezing Income Tax thresholds
- Inheritance tax on farmers
- Employment Rights Bill ‘day one’ rights
- Business rates for pubs
- Digital ID
Thirteen, unlucky for some…
