‘It’s Possible’ US Jumps In Iran-Israel War, Trump Says

President Donald Trump said Sunday that U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict could be a possibility in an interview with ABC News.

“We’re not involved in it. It’s possible we could get involved. But we are not at this moment involved,” the president told Rachel Scott during an interview. (RELATED: Israel Strikes Iran)

Trump also told the outlet that he had a long conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin Saturday to talk about the conflict in the Middle East. During the call, he expressed interest in Putin acting as a mediator between Israel and Iran.

“I would be open to it. [Putin] is ready. He called me about it. We had a long talk about it. We talked about this more than his situation. This is something I believe is going to get resolved,” Trump shared with the outlet.

This comes after Israel asked the Trump administration to join directly in their war effort against Iran to eliminate its nuclear program, according to a report from Axios.

Israel doesn’t currently have the bunker-buster bombs or large bomber aircraft required to take out Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility, which is buried deep inside a mountain, the outlet reported. The U.S., however, does have those capabilities within flying distance of Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that his administration’s goal was to eliminate Iran’s ability to build weapons to destroy Israel. If Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility remains open, then this goal cannot be accomplished, the outlet noted.

Steve Witkoff was originally set to travel to Oman Sunday for another round of talks with Iranian officials regarding Iran’s nuclear program, ABC News noted. This was called off, however, after Israel’s strike on Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the nuclear talks ‘unjustifiable’ following the attacks, which he claimed were backed by the United States.

Trump gave Iran a 60-day ultimatum to make a deal and he told the outlet he doesn’t plan to set a new deadline.

“No, there’s no deadline. But they are talking. They’d like to make a deal. They’re talking. They continue to talk,” he said. “Something like this had to happen because I think even from both sides, but something like this had to happen. They want to talk, and they will be talking.”

Trump also told the outlet that Israel’s strikes on Iran may force a deal to come quicker.
