Jake Tapper Miffed Over Trump’s Pearl Harbor Joke At Japan Summit

CNN host Jake Tapper slammed President Donald Trump’s attempt at humor during a White House briefing Thursday.

A reporter asked why Trump hadn’t informed U.S. allies before striking Iran. Trump said he wanted the attack to be a complete surprise and added that Japan understands the element of surprise, joking that he hadn’t been warned about Pearl Harbor.

“Why didn’t you tell U.S. allies…about the war before attacking Iran?” one reporter asked.

“We wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor?” Trump asked.

Tapper reposted a video of the exchange and said that the president’s comparison was historically inaccurate.

“FWIW Prime Minister Takaichi was born 20 years after Pearl Harbor,” Tapper wrote.

While Tapper was correct about the historical timeline, his reaction suggested he missed the humor. The president’s response was clearly tongue-in-cheek, and Trump himself was born years after Pearl Harbor.

The Japanese surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor took place Dec. 7, 1941, marking America’s entry into World War II. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was born March 7, 1961, and Trump was born June 14, 1946 — both years well after the Pearl Harbor attack.
