Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett on Wednesday said she believes President Donald Trump targets her because Republicans secretly admire her.
Trump has taken aim at Crockett, calling her “a low-IQ person” and mocking the notion that she could lead the Democratic Party. When Acosta asked on “The Jim Acosta Show” why Trump mentions her, Crockett speculated the president may have seen positive polling about her — adding that her real-life experiences suggest Republicans are fans of hers. “I think that he is listening to the polling. Republicans poll all the time. And I have no idea what all is happening in their polling,” Crockett told Acosta. “But I can tell you in real life that I’ve had a number of Republicans that approach me as they see me out, and they say, ‘Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I really like you. Like, we come from completely different parties, but I believe that you are fighting for the people. I believe that you are trying to do what’s best for all of us. I may disagree with, like, how you feel like we get there, but I agree with your fight.’”
“And I think that that’s what’s scary for them — is this idea that it’s not just, say, black folk, that are listening to me, right? Or it’s not just, like, super liberal folk,” she continued. “It’s this idea that, you know, people who even aren’t Democrats would actually listen to what I have to say.”
Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez similarly claimed in 2021 that Republicans attacked her because of their “deranged sexual frustrations.”
Crockett has risen to prominence through launching racially-charged tirades and inflammatory anti-Republican attacks, including calling wheelchair-bound Texas Gov. Greg Abbott “Governor Hot Wheels.” However, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Vice Chair David Hogg on “The Breakfast Club” Friday gushed about the congresswoman.
“I love her. She is amazing. I think that people want to see somebody who fights and calls out the bullshit ultimately. I think that’s what Jasmine does,” Hogg said. “And we need a hell of a lot more people that are out there that are willing to do just that … and not say, ‘Oh my God, Republicans are going to criticize me for saying this.’ Screw that. They’re going to criticize you no matter what.”
“And I think Jasmine is, frankly, the type of leader that we’re really looking to support in some senses, right?” he added.
Crockett also admitted in a March interview with “Lone Star Politics” that she was prioritizing resisting Trump over enacting legislation in Congress.
