Jasmine Crockett Claims Comey’s Defense Attorney Will Be A Star

Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett claimed that the defense attorney who could help former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey beat charges would “make a name for themselves.”

A federal grand jury indicted Comey on charges of lying to Congress and obstruction on Thursday over testimony given during a September 2020 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. “All In’ host Chris Hayes asked Crockett, a former defense attorney, if she would be eager to take the case. “This is an opportunity for someone to make a name for themselves because inevitably, if they are halfway competent, they should be able to win,” Crockett told Hayes. “They should push this thing to the limit. When you were just having your conversation about whether or not the defendant should then start pushing for, say, a speedy trial, which is something that is actually codified on the federal level, and it is, actually very quick. Last time I checked it’s 60 days.”

“So, yeah, I would absolutely push forward and say, let’s go,” Crockett continued. “And I think they’re going to have a harder time trying to figure out who’s going to actually prosecute the case than he will have trying to find somebody to defend the case.”

Democrats have objected to the indictment of Comey, with Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut calling for the “private bar” to start “rising up” against Trump. Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell hinted Thursday that bar complaints could be used against attorneys who participate in prosecuting figures like Comey.

Special Counsel John Durham released a report May 15, 2023, on the origins of the FBI investigation of allegations that former President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia that found that the FBI “did not and could not corroborate” the claims from the now-discredited Steele Dossier, which was used to obtain warrants to monitor communications by Carter Page and other associates of Trump. The investigation took place while Comey was FBI director before his firing in 2017.
