Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was seen crying Wednesday during her MSNBC show “The Briefing” over the Minneapolis mass shooting victims after saying on social media that she’s had “enough” of Christians’ “thoughts and prayers.”
Following reports that a trans-identifying male opened fire at the Annunciation Catholic Church during Mass on Wednesday morning, Psaki faced massive backlash online after posting that prayers are “not freaking enough.” During her show, Psaki said she has been “consumed” with news of the shooting, adding that her children are the same age before tearing up on-air.
“I have been thinking, as I’m sure everybody who has consumed this today has been doing as well, about my kids, who happen to be about the same ages as the two who were killed, about sending them off to school this morning. I’ve been thinking about their friends and their teachers, about all the parents, about all the grandparents out there navigating the return to school,” Psaki said before taking a pause. “All they should be hoping to do is have someone to sit with at lunch or someone to play with on the playground.”
During a press briefing on Wednesday, officials identified Robin Westman, a man in his 20s, as the alleged gunman who killed two children and injured at least 17 others. With Democrats calling for more gun control, some joined Psaki in saying that “thoughts and prayers” are not enough to stop such attacks.

Psaki continued her monologue, at one point appearing to apologize for crying on air, saying that the subject is a “tough one” for her.
“They should be waiting to hear an update when they get home. And that is not what these parents at the school experienced today,” Psaki added. “Sorry, this is a tough one. Having your child killed while they are sitting in a pew for a morning prayer service is not what any parent should have to worry about. I have felt a mixture of anger and a lot of anger and emotional exhaustion about this today, as I’m sure many of you have, because we have been here so many times, so many times. Yet again, like clockwork, half of the politicians in our country have little more to offer than thoughts and prayers. That is all they are offering.”
The MSNBC host went on to call out President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance for offering “thoughts and prayers” to the victims, saying that lawmakers need to enact more gun control in the U.S.
Officials said Westman opened fire through a window of the Annunciation Catholic Church during Mass, killing an eight-year-old and a 10-year-old. However, before authorities were able to get to him, Westman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the back of the church.
Videos of the gunman’s manifesto were uploaded to a YouTube account that bore Westman’s name, showing disturbing footage of multiple guns, cartridges, and ammunition with cryptic statements written on them. Phrases like “Where is your God?” “6 million wasn’t enough,” “kill pedos”, and calls to kill President Donald Trump could be seen as the cartridges were shown to the camera.
In 2019, the alleged gunman changed his name from Robert to Robin, with court records showing that his mother, who works at the Annunciation Catholic Church, submitted the application for the change, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. The application said the change was necessary because Westman “identifies as a female and wants her name to reflect that identification.”
