Robert Jenrick has written to David Lammy demanding to let into prison. Once he’s in there he has to find the biggest guy in the cell block and pick a fight with him – it’s the only way he’s going to earn respect…
Jenrick asked then-Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood for “access-under the customary protocols-for myself and named members of the Shadow Justice team to visit four sites that have recently presented issues: HMP Long Lartin, HMP Belmarsh, HMP Manchester (Strangeways) and HMP Wandsworth. Direct discussion with governors, officers and healthcare staff will allow HM’s Opposition to test policy, refine proposals and hold the government to account.” He didn’t get a reply and in response to a written question Labour said his letter would be “responded to in due course”…
Now the Shadow Justice Secretary has written to Lammy to complain that “the public has a right to know whether these prisons are being run safely and lawfully. Parliament has a duty to hold the authorities to account. You are standing in the way of both.” He again asks for access:
“Given recent events, I am once again requesting to visit to the prisons I mentioned earlier, particularly HMP Wandsworth. We will of course comply with every operational and security requirement.”
Wandsworth is of course the terribly-run prison from which everyone is escaping. What’s Lammy got to hide?
Read the full letter below:
“6th November 2025
Since June I have asked repeatedly, and through the proper channels, to see for myself what is happening inside several prisons that are presenting concerns. Your department has blocked that scrutiny.
I first wrote on 11th June and subsequently tabled Parliamentary Questions in 15th July – but have not received a reply. The public has a right to know whether these prisons are being run safely and lawfully. Parliament has a duty to hold the authorities to account. You are standing in the way of both.
Given recent events, I am once again requesting to visit to the prisons I mentioned earlier, particularly HMP Wandsworth. We will of course comply with every operational and security requirement.
Please have your officials contact my office as soon as possible to confirm a visit, with an opportunity to speak with the governors, access to the relevant wings, and a discussion with the senior management team about recent events and the performance of the prison.
The country is entitled to a government that does not flinch from scrutiny. Start by letting us in.
Yours sincerely,
Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP
Shadow Secretary of State for Justice”
