Badenoch’s interview with the Times has come out. Some choice quotes:
- “It seemed pointless to wait and give him the opportunity to defect first because that would cause more damage to the party.”
- “He wanted to burn the Conservative Party to the ground. That is what Reform wants, not to hold Labour to account or transform this country for the better, but to destroy our party. I am never going to let that happen.”
- “It is extraordinary that Rob came to our away day and to our shadow cabinet meeting this week, smiling, being complementary, taking notes and pretending to be one of us, when he was plotting all the time. Reform is the party of traitors. You can’t trust them. Nigel Farage is doing my spring cleaning.”
- “It is like someone wanting to be the priest of a church and not getting the job so going off to the mosque next door and saying, ‘I’m going to be an imam now’. It’s not logical, the ease with which they can abandon their political beliefs. That’s not how to find people to run a country properly and oversee national security. They will do the wrong thing at every opportunity if they only care about themselves and govern in their own self-interest.”
The Tory leader also commented on the party’s improvement in the polls: “No one was listening, voters weren’t ready to hear from me. I needed time; it doesn’t mean we are in a perfect place yet, I suspect it will take at least two years for the public to really want to listen and we have a difficult set of local elections coming up.” Difficult indeed…
