Former President Joe Biden’s recent diagnosis of advanced prostate cancer has brought renewed scrutiny to a 2022 comment in which he publicly claimed to “have cancer,” a statement the White House had downplayed at the time, as reported by The New York Post.
During a speech at the Brayton Power Station in Somerset, Massachusetts, in July 2022, Biden spoke about his childhood in Claymont, Delaware, and the health effects he believed stemmed from emissions at local oil refineries.
“That’s why I and so damn many other people I grew up with have cancer,” Biden said. The remark raised immediate questions about whether the then-president had disclosed a serious medical condition.

At the time, then–White House spokesman Andrew Bates dismissed the speculation by pointing reporters to Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler, who said the comment was a reference to Biden’s previous non-melanoma skin cancer treatments.

“Check out Biden’s medical report. Before he became president, he’d had non-melanoma skin cancers removed,” Kessler posted on X.
How dumb is this tweet? Check out Biden’s medical report. Before he became president, he’d had non-melanoma skin cancers removed. Has no one at @RNCResearch ever had this common procedure? https://t.co/TS9VWtKcYC https://t.co/itklkVZIor

Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, noted in a 2021 medical report that Biden had a history of localized non-melanoma skin cancers, which were fully removed via Mohs surgery prior to his presidency. O’Connor attributed these to sun exposure rather than chemical exposure.
However, the White House announced Sunday that Biden had now been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. A spokesperson stated:
“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”

The diagnosis raises new questions about how long the cancer may have been present.
“He’s had this for many years, maybe even a decade, growing there and spreading,” said Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a former health policy advisor to Biden’s transition team, during an interview on MSNBC.
“He had it while he was president. He probably had it at the start of his presidency in 2021.”
Dr. Howard Forman, a former Yale School of Medicine professor, also expressed skepticism that the disease had only recently developed. “It is inconceivable that this was not being followed before he left the Presidency,” Forman posted.
“Gleason grade 9 would have had an elevated PSA level for some time before this diagnosis.”
It is inconceivable that this was not being followed before he left the Presidency. Gleason grade 9 would have had an elevated PSA level for some time before this diagnosis. And he must have had a PSA test numerous times before. This is odd.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 13% of men in the United States are diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.
While Biden’s diagnosis is considered aggressive, his spokesperson stated that it appears to be hormone-sensitive and “allows for effective management.”
Biden acknowledged the diagnosis publicly on social media. “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support,” he wrote.

The diagnosis comes amid heightened attention on Biden’s age and mental sharpness, particularly with the upcoming release of Original Sin, a book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’s Alex Thompson that reportedly discusses concerns about Biden’s fitness for office during his final year in the White House.
