Democrat Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman scoffed at Democrats and liberal activists on Tuesday who booed him during a “No Kings” protest in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
One activist at the protest, which was held on Saturday to stand in opposition of President Donald Trump, called out Fetterman for not being present at the event and accused him of wanting Democrats to “roll over and play dead.” After defending Trump’s parade in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, Fetterman said on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” that the Democrats’ “prerogative” is to attack those on their side for disagreeing with them.
“Well I think two things can be true. I think, absolutely, my unapologetic support of Israel and a secure border and [my refusal] to shut the government down, I have absolutely taken a hit from the base. I’m not sure why Democrats would boo a fellow Democrat, but that’s their prerogative now,” Fetterman said. “And now with the military parade, again, there was no goose stepping, and first of all let’s say stop comparing anyone, anything to the Nazis and those kinds of things, that’s crazy. And remember, that’s our soldiers, this is not an occupying force.”
Fetterman stated in an X post on Saturday that the U.S. Army parade is an “appropriate” way to commemorate the Army’s “sacrifice, dedication and service.” (RELATED: John Fetterman Really Doesn’t Like Showing Up To Work On Mondays)
WATCH:
Fetterman has developed a strained relationship with some of his fellow Democrats for condemning the anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) riots, being a staunch defender of Israel and becoming the only Democrat to vote in favor of Attorney General Pam Bondi’s confirmation. He also came under fire by his party for voting in favor of a Republican-backed bill in March that intended to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year.
More recently, the Pennsylvania senator criticized his party for its handling of the U.S.-Mexico border throughout former President Joe Biden’s administration, in which he stated on June 2 that the record-high number of encounters at the border were “unacceptable” and a threat to national security. The senator further co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act, which requires federal authorities to detain illegal immigrants charged with committing theft-related crimes in the U.S.
Fetterman’s support among likely Democratic voters has sunk in recent months, with an internal poll finding that 49% of voters in the Pittsburgh area saying they hold an unfavorable view of the senator. Some Republicans have stepped in to defend Fetterman against concerns about his physical and mental health, including Republican Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick, who condemned the Democrats’ “disgraceful smears” against Fetterman in a May 9 post on X.
