National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell could soon find himself in front of the Intelligence and Security Committee over the Chinese spy scandal. Asked on the Today Programme whether Powell would be called, ISC Chair Lord Beamish said:
“Well, we are doing an investigation. I won’t give a running commentary on what we do. We’re not a select committee. We have statutory powers to call people and evidence. We follow the evidence. So if that is needed, yes.”
Powell is already due to face MPs at a private session of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy. Unlike the JCNSS, the ISC reports directly to the Prime Minister and has statutory powers to access classified material from intelligence agencies. Plenty of questions for Powell to answer…
