Journalist plots run for Congress in New Hampshire, her party choice will not shock you

Daily Caller News Foundation

Hanna Trudo, a former senior political correspondent for The Hill, is considering launching a House bid as a Democrat in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, according to Politico.

Trudo, a New Hampshire native, told Politico that she moved back to her home state after Democratic New Hampshire Rep. Chris Pappas announced in April that he would run in the state’s open 2026 Senate race. Trudo has referred to herself as “a fourth-generation Granite Stater … who grew up working-class,” according to Politico.

Pappas is running for New Hampshire’s open Senate seat to replace retiring Democratic New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, who announced in March that she would not seek reelection in 2026.

Trudo referred to herself as “a journalist who’s tired of writing the same story about how Democrats keep losing to Republicans and failing us,” Politico reported.

“I’m used to disrupting the status quo in D.C.,” Trudo told the outlet. “I’ve lived it, I’ve covered it and I know how to beat the odds.”

“As a New Hampshire girl who grew up working class, I’m demanding more from our Democrats,” Trudo wrote Monday in a post to X.

Aside from The Hill, Trudo previously worked at The Daily Beast, Politico, the National Journal and Wired, according to her LinkedIn profile. Her most recent article for The Hill was published on March 7.

In April, Marine Corps veteran and former Obama administration official Maura Sullivan announced her candidacy for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, WMUR first reported.

Failed Democratic 2024 presidential nominee Kamala Harris carried the 1st district’s vote by two percentage points over President Donald Trump, according to The Downballot’s calculations. The seat is one of 26 the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is targeting in the midterms.

The 1st district was also notably the home district of current White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the Republican nominee for the seat in 2022. Leavitt, who lost to the incumbent Pappas by eight points, has said she is “not considering” running again for Congress in 2026.

Trudo did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
