Former MSNBC host Joy Reid suggested during a recent broadcast that a future Democratic administration could denaturalize and deport Melania Trump, as well as potentially take similar action against members of President Donald Trump’s family.
Reid made the remarks during an episode of her new YouTube show, joined by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), while reacting to President Trump’s recent comments on denaturalization and deportation during a visit to Alligator Alcatraz in Florida last week.
In his speech, President Trump said he is open to deporting individuals who are U.S. citizens, stating, “They’re not new to our country. They’re old to our country. Many of them were born in our country. I think we ought to get them the hell out of here, too, if you want to know the truth. So maybe that will be the next job.”

His comments followed the release of a Department of Justice memo that gives U.S. Attorneys expanded discretion in initiating denaturalization proceedings against individuals with criminal records.
The policy guidance, according to reports, allows federal prosecutors to seek the revocation of naturalized citizenship in certain cases.
During the conversation, Reid responded to Trump’s remarks by raising the possibility of Democrats applying similar discretion if they regain power.
“If you give the president of the United States monarchical-like powers to say, ‘I don’t like your views, I don’t like your take on issues, I don’t like that you’re too liberal, you’re not conservative enough, I’m just gonna take away your naturalized citizenship,’ well… if we ever get a Democratic president, they could say, ‘I don’t like Melania Trump,’” Reid said.

“She wasn’t born here. She was born in Slovenia. She is a naturalized citizen. She’s outta here.”
Reid continued by referencing the Trump children and their mother, the late Ivana Trump.
“And by the way, Ivana Trump, the late Ivana Trump, who’s buried in the golf course in New Jersey in Donald Trump’s golf club, she wasn’t an American citizen,” Reid said.
“And three of her children are Don Jr., Eric, and Ivanka.”
She added, “And maybe the next Democratic president says, ‘You know what? I don’t like the Trumps. And so we’re gonna denaturalize all of the Trump children, whose mother was a foreigner at the time.’”
Reid also brought up the family of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, noting, “This opens a huge door, Congresswoman, because that means that any future president can decide that they don’t like the Trumps and don’t want them here and want Melania gone. And they could just denaturalize and deport her, and she’d be outta here.”
Joy Reid claims Trump’s immigration policies could lead to Melania Trump being denaturalized and deported.

The discussion was framed around hypothetical consequences of broad executive authority and was prompted by recent immigration-related policy changes under the Trump administration.
President Trump also made headlines last week by referencing New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, whom he claimed “may be here illegally.”
Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, is a U.S. citizen and a Muslim of South Asian descent.
No official response has been issued by the White House or the Trump family regarding Reid’s comments.
The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services have not addressed Reid’s hypothetical scenario.
The segment has drawn criticism and attention across political circles for its references to deporting U.S. citizens and raising questions about the limits of executive power on immigration enforcement.
