Movements in wonk world as free marketeers at the Adam Smith Institute think tank unveil a new polling outfit – Adam Smith Insights – aimed at gauging public opinion on economics and policy reform. The organisation will be headed up by data scientist Emma Schubart formerly of polling firm J.L. Partners. Chairman James Lawson told Guido:

“Adam Smith Insights provides a truly unique offering, blending rigorous research with creative insights, all underpinned by robust data. This is an exciting opportunity to explore fresh perspectives, shedding light on British and global attitudes on issues ranging from taxation to civil liberties. Drawing on the Adam Smith Institute’s legacy of policy impact, we will collaborate closely to take the next steps in shaping future policy agendas and deepening our understanding of public opinion.”

The organisation will run online surveys and is preparing to join the British Polling Council, building on the initiative of the ASI’s core team. They’re also hiring Mitchell Palmer, an adviser to the New Zealand government. Their first poll, conducted from 6-8 June surveying over 1,000 UK adults, shows 52% think taxes are too high, while just 5% say the government spends them well. Guido hears there will be plenty more of those to come. Probably won’t be good news for Reeves…
