Former Vice President Kamala Harris is cheering Democrats battling Republicans as the government shutdown heads into its fourth week.
Ms. Harris, who is touring the country to talk about her presidential campaign memoir, said Democrats “are doing the right thing by standing up for working people and not allowing the Republicans to carry a tax cut for the wealthiest people in our country on the backs of working people in America.”
She added, “The Republicans control the House. They control the Senate. They control the White House. They are in charge, and they are responsible for the shutdown.”
She said in a Friday interview that The Associated Press published Saturday that she keeps in contact with the Democrats on Capitol Hill who want to extend enhanced Obamacare subsidies.
Senate Democrats for the 10th time blocked a temporary stopgap bill on Thursday that would’ve funded the government through Nov. 21.
Meanwhile, Ms. Harris said she still sees herself as the “leader of the party.”
“I take seriously that responsibility and duty that I feel” as the previous Democratic presidential nominee.
As for 2028, she said she hasn’t decided if she’ll run again, although she signaled it’s possible.
She’s been using the tour for her book, “107 Days,” as a way of “talking and mostly listening with folks” and getting them ready for the midterm elections next year.
