Knife-Wielding Man Shot Multiple Times After Advancing Towards Police Officers [WATCH]

A knife-wielding man who advanced toward officers in Escondido, California, was shot multiple times on November 26, 2025, after police said he ignored repeated commands to drop his weapon and continued approaching law enforcement personnel in traffic lanes, as reported by The New York Post.

Escondido Police said they began receiving calls at approximately 12:10 p.m. reporting a man acting erratically near Centre City Parkway and Felicita Avenue. Callers told dispatchers the man was holding a knife and approaching passing vehicles.

City of Anderson police, SWAT and investigators work the scene outside Renaissance Academy 805 East Whitner Street Anderson, S.C. Thursday, April 17, 2025. The shooting took place in a school owned park across the street from the school building.

Authorities identified the man as 54-year-old Juan Ramos. Police said Ramos began walking northbound in the southbound lanes of Centre City Parkway, eventually reaching the intersection at 13th Avenue.

By that time, multiple officers had responded and surrounded him while ordering him to drop the knife.

Video recorded by witnesses shows officers with their firearms drawn, issuing commands moments before shots were fired.

Police said Ramos continued to stand and attempted to run after being struck by multiple rounds, prompting officers to fire again until he collapsed and could no longer get back to his feet.

A witness who asked to remain anonymous described the scene. “It was like a movie, he was in the middle of the street before pulling out a knife,” the witness said.

“All the police surrounded him and opened fire – I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Every time he was shot, he would just keep getting back up before they started shooting again.”

Ramos was transported to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. Police said he is expected to survive his injuries. According to investigators, Ramos will face charges for assaulting a peace officer with a deadly weapon.

San Diego Police Homicide Detectives responded to the scene as part of standard county protocol for officer-involved shootings. San Diego Police Department Lieutenant Chris Tivanian said Ramos repeatedly ignored commands and ran toward officers.

“The man ignored the officers’ commands and ran toward the detective with the knife in his hand, prompting all three to discharge their service weapons, striking the man,” Tivanian said.

“The man fell to the ground, immediately got back up and ran toward the uniformed officers with the knife in his hand. This prompted a second shooting by the officers, again striking the man and causing him to fall to the ground. The man continued to hold onto the knife preventing officers from approaching to take him into custody and render medical aid. During the confrontation the man made comments indicating he wanted the officers to shoot him.”

Officials said the investigation into the shooting will follow the standard multi-agency process. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office will review the findings to determine whether the officers bear any criminal liability.

The Escondido Police Department will conduct an administrative review of its personnel’s firearm discharge, and both the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will monitor the case.

Authorities asked anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
