Tory written questions have managed to eke out some details from the government, which says the visit “was arranged between the UK’s Ministry of Defence and China’s Office for International Military Cooperation of the Central Military Commission” and was authorised by the government. James Cartlidge asked Labour ministers to deny that Radakin had discussed the Chagos Islands during his visit. They could not and said today:

“The Chief of the Defence Staff met with Gen Liu Zhenli Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission of the People’s Liberation Army. They discussed a range of security issues and agreed that in an unstable world we must play our part as responsible nations with global interests.”
