Labour Hands Nepal £3.6 Million for ‘Social Inclusion’ and ‘Green’ Programmes

Unsurprisingly, the Foreign Office is still sending cash abroad to fund diversity and green projects despite the foreign aid budget cut. In the year 2025/26, Nepal will be handed £1.6 million towards the “Rights, Inclusion, Voice and Agency Nepal” programme to “empower women and excluded groups” including LGBTQ+ and “advance gender equality, disability and social inclusion”. The project outlines:

“It will strengthen the capacities of diverse and intersecting Women Rights Organisations (WROs) and Civil Society Organisation’s (CSOs) through the provision of flexible, multi-year funding and catalytic enabling grants. It will help foster an enabling environment in Nepal, increasing collectivisation and exchange between organisations to support movement building and social norm change.”

Nicely vague…

Another £3.6 million is going towards ‘Green Growth Nepal’ to invest in “investment in green industries and services”. Total bill there: £5.2 million. For that you could:

  • Hire 130 police officers.
  • Buy 3,250 NHS hospital beds.
  • Recruit 125 British Army Officers.

Ironically, under the risk assessment section of the Rights, Inclusion, Voice and Agency Nepal programme, it states:

“There is a risk of negative public and media perception of FCDO and its implementing partners working on politically sensitive inclusion agendas in Nepal, including perceptions of imposing external values and backlash from opponents of gender equality and inclusion.”

The taxpayer may have a view on which should be prioritised. UK DOGE recommends costs are cut here…
