Labour’s crusade to turn Britain into a socialist throwback continues apace – this week unveiling their latest brainwave: state-funded restaurants, dishing up meals for £3. Ministers confirmed a pilot scheme – costing the taxpayer £1.5 million – is being rolled out in Nottingham and Dundee. With further restaurants to open if they are a success…

Science secretary Peter Kyle said the goal is to “get healthy food into the mouths of those who need it” and that they will be “aimed at everybody.” Hugh Osmond, co-founder of Pizza Express, torched the idea as “ludicrous”, predicting it will “cost a lot of money, provide absolutely terrible food and, in the end, fail,” while Gail’s owner Luke Johnson said it was a “bad joke.” The industry is already competitive…

Meanwhile, Reeves’ business-bashing tax hikes forced 4,000 ‘private’ restaurants to shut their doors last year – with more than 10% now on the brink of closure. Perhaps Labour wouldn’t need to dream up Soviet-style slop houses if they stopped taxing the real ones out of existence…
