Independent Borders Watchdog: Labour Plan to End Asylum Hotels Won’t Be Achieved
Borders watchdog David Bolt was at Justice and Home Affairs Committee today to shred Labour’s immigration policy. After saying he wasn’t “convinced smashing the gangs was the right way of thinking about things”, Bolt slammed Reeves’ pledge to end asylum hotels by the end of the Parliament, saying it won’t be achieved. The independent chief inspector of borders and immigration told MPs:
“I don’t think it will be achieved, frankly. And so the numbers within asylum system are not very tractable, they’re very large numbers and it’s very hard to see how they’re going to be reduced significantly even over the length of Parliament.”
Meanwhile, the backlog continues to balloon – 50,976 asylum appeals were outstanding as of March. That’s double the figure from 2024 and seven times higher than in 2023. With hotel stays now stretching beyond a year it’s no surprise minister are looking to buy hotels rather than book them…
