Below is Guido’s rolling list of Labour MPs who have already expressed ‘grave concerns’ over Shabana Mahmood’s ‘Denmark-style’ asylum reforms. Mahmood will outline the new policies in the Commons this afternoon, but backbenchers are already breaking ranks over the ‘divisive rhetoric’. Tony Vaughan was first out the gates last night, claiming “the idea that recognised refugees need to be deported is wrong… the rhetoric around these reforms encourages the same culture of divisiveness that sees racism and abuse growing in our communities.” He happens to represent Folkestone and Hythe, which is a preferred landing spot for small boat migrants…
Others will follow. The government is bracing for a significant PLP rebellion, with at least one minister said to be on ‘resignation watch.’ Mahmood made her case in the Guardian after touring the TV studios yesterday:
“I know that some of these measures will face opposition. But this is a moral mission for me. I know that a country without secure borders is a less safe country for those who look like me. Dark forces are stirring up anger in this country, and seeking to turn that anger into hate. We must take the opportunity we have to stop that from happening. And I know we can.”
MPs are squealing over the plan to stretch the wait to apply for permanent settlement status to 20 years. Cracking down on illegal immigrants’ right to a family life is also on the cards. Mahmood is gambling that a chorus of whingeing from backbenchers is a price worth paying to address the haemorrhaging of votes to Reform. High stakes…
