Labour has quietly binned the Minister for Exports role. The Department for Business and Trade’s fresh list of ministerial titles is out today – and not one of them mentions exports. Before the reshuffle, Gareth Thomas carried the brief as Minister for Services, Small Business, and Exports. Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffith told Guido:
“Labour seem to have entirely given up on supporting British exporters: they’ve scrapped the designated Minister for Exports. On day one of a Conservative Government, we would bring back the Exports Minister to back British businesses.”
Thomas was replaced by Blair McDougall, whose title is now Minister for Small Business and Economic Transformation. You’d think a Minister for Exports might be useful for getting steel tariffs back down to 0%…
