China hawks are outraged by Guido’s earlier revelation that trade minister Douglas Alexander twice met with IHG – a company accused of sanctions violations in China. Golden Keir-A…

Iain Duncan Smith, who has previously spoken out against IHG’s alleged activity in past months and has been sanctioned by China, tells Guido:

“This is an appalling meeting with a company that works with the Chinese organisation that is complicit in the genocide of the Uyghur in Xinjiang, millions whom are in slave labour, the women are being forcibly sterilised and their children taken away to ‘re-education’ camps.

That a government minister is meeting a company working with a Chinese govt entity responsible for this genocide is a body blow to the Uyghur now being persecuted by the Chinese government. Shame on him.”

A letter organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China and signed by IDS and MPs Blair McDougall, Chris Law, and Alex Sobel (among other parliamentarians) asks IHG why it is reportedly massively expanding operations in Xinjiang and whether “its properties or local partners in Xinjiang have any ties—direct or indirect—to the XPCC or other state entities sanctioned for their role in human rights violations?” IHG has not previously commented on the allegations. Labour has questions to answer after cosying up with this company…
