Lammy ‘Suing’ Italian Taxi Driver After Fare-Dodging Accusation

David Lammy and his wife, artist Nicola Green, are ‘suing’ an Italian taxi driver for “fraudulently removing luggage and cash” after the driver accused the pair of refusing to pay for a six-hour ride from Forli in Italy to Flaine in France last month, according to French authorities. The driver took the pair’s belongings to a local police station to report the incident. Clearly a bumpy ride…

The driver claims he was the one wronged, telling French newspaper Le Provence:

“On the night of April 10–11, I was the victim of assault and violence by members of a British embassy during an international transfer, where they refused to pay me.”

The Foreign Office firmly denies the driver’s claims, stating the “fare was paid in full” and that Lammy and Green are “named as victims in this matter, and the driver has been charged with theft,” confirming there is an “ongoing legal process”. The French prosecutor in Bonneville has since opened a formal investigation into the incident describing it as a “commercial dispute.” The grand tour cost €1,550 with €850 already forked out via the transfer service, leaving a disputed €700 balance and, apparently, a very disgruntled cabbie. A frosty foreign affair…
