A central plank of measures announced by Lammy to fix dysfunctional prisons – a ‘Justice Performance Board’ – has only met once. For 45 minutes…
The formation of the board was announced on 11 November:
“A new Justice Performance Board will give the Deputy Prime Minister greater oversight of the system and drive improvements in prisons and criminal courts, laser-focussed on addressing key metrics including releases in error.”
Information obtained by Guido’s FOI Unit shows that the board has only met once, the day before its announcement. It has not met again. Present were:
- Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, Chair
- Lord Timpson, Minister of State for Prisons, Probation and Reducing
Reoffending - Sarah Sackman, Minister of State for Courts and Legal Services
- Jo Farrar, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Justice
- Baroness Levitt, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State
- Nick Goodwin, CEO HMCTS
- James McEwan, CEO HMPPS
- Amy Holmes, Interim Chief Operating Officer
- Kim Thorndon-Edwards, Chief Probation Officer – England and Wales
- James Wrigley, Deputy Principal Private Secretary
- Michael Devlin, Special Adviser
- Will Heilpern, Special Adviser to the Secretary of State for Justice
Also in attendance were were nine MoJ civil servants including the head of the “Ministerial Priorities Unit,” bringing the total attendees to 22. The meeting was 45 minutes long, which means that each attendee got 2 minutes and 3 seconds to speak. Subsequently Lammy told broadcasters this month that 12 more prisoners were released in error. 45 minutes to fix the prisons…
