Lara Trump Laces Into Katie Couric Over Attempt At Prodding John Fetterman To Condemn Charlie Kirk

Fox News host Lara Trump rebuked journalist Katie Couric on Friday for attempting to prod Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman to criticize slain Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder Charlie Kirk.

Couric made the attempt while interviewing Fetterman on “Next Question with Katie Couric” on Thursday, but the senator did not take the bait. Trump said on “America’s Newsroom” that Couric should research Kirk to understand who he truly was and that her line of questioning was sickening. “Maybe Katie Couric should do a deep dive into what Charlie Kirk stood for because he stood for freedom of speech, no matter what it was you were saying. He would go into these college campuses, into these bastions of liberal ideology and he would want to engage with people,” Trump said. “He did it peacefully. He did it respectfully. He believed in America. He believed in God, in Jesus and there’s nothing that he said or ever talked about with people that was outrageous.”

“But the idea that she was essentially trying to get validation from John Fetterman there for Charlie Kirk’s murder is kind of outrageous. I don’t even know what the point of any of that was, but it kind of goes back to how we got to this spot in the first place, where we saw a young father assassinated in cold blood,” she added. “It’s because people continue to push this idea that somehow there’s a problem with that and maybe action should be taken. That was really shameful and pretty disgraceful and disgusting.”

Some celebrated Kirk’s Sept. 10 assassination and denounced his rhetoric, leading to multiple firings.

After Fetterman condemned “extreme rhetoric” on Couric’s podcast, the host said “some people might say Charlie Kirk’s rhetoric was extreme.”

“People condemned political violence, but they also felt a great deal of discomfort with his language, suggesting that these kinds of words lead to violence,” Couric added.

Fetterman acknowledged having disagreements with Kirk, but touted his belief in the First Amendment.

“I’m an absolute free speech guy and you have the right to say these things,” the senator said. “And you definitely also have the right not to get shot by sharing your views.”

Moreover, members of the media and others with large online followings misled their audiences on Kirk’s beliefs on topics like race and sexuality after his assassination.

For instance, The New York Times had to issue a correction on Sept. 11 for falsely attributing an antisemitic remark to Kirk in an article describing his general political views.

“An earlier version of this article described incorrectly an antisemitic statement that Charlie Kirk had made on an episode of his podcast,” the NYT’s correction stated. “He was quoting a statement from a post on social media and went on to critique it. It was not his own statement.”
