Leaked video of ‘creepy’ Idaho killer Brian Kohberger prompts prison investigation

A viral video featuring what appeared to be University of Idaho murderer Brian Kohberger in prison prompted questions of AI influence amid an official investigation.

Last month, the admitted murderer’s sentencing hearing resulted in the handing down of four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole after a plea agreement allowed him to avoid the death penalty. Now, amid reports of torment from other inmates, a video purported to be the convict in his cell surfaced online, leading the Idaho Department of Corrections to respond to the potential “clear violation” of their policies.

In a statement posted to their website and social media, IDOC expressed, “We are aware of the videos circulating online and are investigating the matter. While we cannot yet confirm the veracity of the videos, if verified, they are a clear violation of IDOC policy and the parties responsible will be held accountable, up to and including termination. We caution that some videos may be fake or AI-enhanced.”

The clips showed what appeared to be Kohberger in a cell — with a bed, toilet, trash can, and multiple pairs of footwear — crossing from one side to the other to place something on a shelf piled with clothes before simply standing there. Another found the murderer appearing to handle a shoe.

“Videotaping and publicly sharing security footage is prohibited conduct and we will be reviewing all legal options, including criminal prosecution,” the IDOC statement went on. “The safety and security of our staff and incarcerated population remain our top priority.”

The murderer’s sentence followed his plea bargain for the brutal 2022 murders of University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen. Since his incarceration, a report from the Daily Mail detailed that the murderer had complained to guards about other prisoners tormenting him.

Former detective Chris McDonough had told the Mail, “They are literally getting up into the grate and yelling at him.”

“The inmates are taking it in turns doing it. It’s relentless,” he went on as an IDOC spokesperson told NewsNation, “We are aware of Kohberger’s complaints about what he considers taunting.”

“Incarcerated individuals commonly communicate with each other in prison. Bryan Kohberger is housed alone in a cell, and IDOC security staff maintain a safe and orderly environment for all individuals in our custody,” the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, Alivea Stevenson, given the chance to address the man who murdered her sister, Kaylee, had said ahead of the sentencing, “The truth is, the scariest part about you is how painfully average you turned out to be. The truth is, you are as dumb as they come. Stupid, clumsy, slow, sloppy, weak, dirty.”

“Let me be very clear: Don’t try to convince yourself you matter just because someone finally said your name out loud. I see through you. You want the truth? Here is the one you will hate the most,” she went on. “If you had not attacked them in their sleep in the middle of the night like a pedophile, Kaylee would have kicked your f*cking a**.”

While the IDOC statement made a note of the potential fraudulent nature of the video, and debate raged online as to whether or not it should be seen by the public, the Ada County Sheriff’s Office made clear, “We are aware of the video footage circulating online showing Bryan Kohberger in a cell. We can confirm it was not recorded at and does not feature the Ada County Jail.”
