Vice President J.D. Vance met with Pope Francis on Easter Sunday at the Casa Santa Marta residence in Vatican City, according to an official press release from the Holy See Press Office.

The brief meeting came amid widespread false claims on social media alleging that the Pope had refused to meet with the vice president.

The Holy See stated that the meeting lasted several minutes and was an opportunity for both men to exchange Easter greetings. Vance, a practicing Catholic, told the Pope, “I know you have not been feeling great, but it’s good to see you in better health. Thank you for seeing me,” in a clip shared by Vatican Media.

The pontiff presented Vice President Vance with a set of chocolate Easter eggs for his young children, along with a Vatican necktie and rosary beads.

Vance, in turn, told Pope Francis he had been praying for his recovery.

The Pope responded with an Easter blessing for Vance and his family.

“Today I met with the Holy Father Pope Francis. I am grateful for his invitation to meet, and I pray for his good health,” Vance posted on X following the visit.

The meeting between the Pope and the vice president included a conversation in which both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to protecting religious freedom and freedom of conscience.

The Vatican described the meeting as “a cordial conversation,” noting that they also “exchanged views on the international situation,” with particular focus on “countries affected by war, political tensions, and difficult humanitarian situations,” including issues related to “migrants, refugees and those in prison.”

Vance and Pope Francis have previously expressed differing views on U.S. immigration policy, particularly concerning the Trump administration’s deportation initiatives.

Despite those differences, the Easter meeting proceeded in a respectful and formal manner.

After meeting with the Pope, Vance joined his wife and children for Easter Mass at St. Paul Outside the Walls, one of the four major papal basilicas in Rome.

The family also visited the tomb of the apostle Saint Paul.

In the days leading up to the meeting, several social media accounts falsely claimed the Pope had refused to meet with Vance and had instead sent another Vatican official to lecture him.

One widely circulated post on X stated, “Pope Francis refused to attend the official meeting with genocidal Zionist JD Vance,” and received over 2.6 million views.

Another viral post, shared by left-wing outlet MeidasTouch, claimed that the Pope had “skipped the Vatican’s official meeting” and sent his deputy to “give the vice president a lecture on compassion.”

That post accumulated more than 3.2 million views before being debunked by the Vatican’s official press release.

Media organizations including The Daily Beast also cited the false narrative, helping to amplify the claim before the Vatican clarified the facts.

The meeting took place as scheduled and was acknowledged in multiple Vatican communications.

No Vatican official issued any statement supporting the hoax narrative.

The incident highlights the growing use of social media to circulate unverified claims, especially targeting high-profile political figures.
