A female lifeguard was seriously injured Wednesday morning after being impaled by a beach umbrella at Asbury Park’s 3rd Avenue Beach, according to local fire officials.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when the young woman was struck by a six-foot umbrella that pierced underneath her left shoulder and exited through her back.
Fire Chief Kevin Keddy of the Asbury Park Fire Department confirmed the details of the injury in a statement.

“The umbrella went underneath her left shoulder and out the back,” Keddy said.
“It was protruding by about a foot.”
Emergency responders and fellow lifeguards quickly responded to the scene. Due to the size and angle of the metal stake that caused the impalement, crews had to use a bandsaw to cut through the object to safely transport the woman to the hospital.
“We had to saw off the stake from the front and the back to make it more manageable,” Keddy explained.
“We bandaged her up and transported her to the hospital.”

The victim remained conscious and alert throughout the incident. She was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
“When we dropped her off, she was conscious and alert and in good spirits — all things considered,” Keddy said.
Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the possibility that the woman may have been attempting to retrieve a windblown umbrella when she fell onto the metal stake.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has previously warned of the dangers posed by unsecured beach umbrellas.
According to agency data, an estimated 3,000 people are injured by beach umbrellas each year.
The pointed ends of these umbrellas can become dangerous when strong winds lift and propel them.
Several fatal incidents involving beach umbrellas have occurred in recent years. In 2022, 63-year-old Tammy Perreault was killed on a beach in South Carolina when an umbrella broke free from the sand and struck her in the torso.
In 2016, 55-year-old Lottie Michelle Belk was fatally injured by a windblown umbrella while visiting Virginia Beach.
Asbury Park authorities have not yet released the name of the lifeguard involved in Wednesday’s incident.
The city is expected to conduct a review of beach safety procedures following the accident.
Beachgoers are reminded to securely anchor umbrellas at all times, especially during windy conditions.
The CPSC advises inserting umbrellas at a slight angle, burying the pole deeply in the sand, and using an anchor or sandbag to keep them grounded.
Officials have not indicated whether the lifeguard will require surgery or how long her recovery may take.
