A warning is completely unnecessary.
Cody Gakpo, a forward for Liverpool, scored during Sunday’s Premier League game that saw his Reds smash Tottenham Hotspur in a 5-1 victory. He sported a “I Belong to Jesus” t-shirt in celebration after the fact, which was absolutely glorious. But here’s the situation now: he’s received an official warning for it.
Gakpo’s goal at Anfield was the third of the game for Liverpool, with the end result ultimately seeing them win the Premier League championship. (RELATED: England’s Sports Governing Body Bans Biological Males From Competing In Women’s Soccer After UK Court Ruling)
But the glory is now swimming in a little scandal, with the Football Association (FA) now giving confirmation that they have issued a warning to Gakpo after his celebration, and for now at least, there will be no further punishment, per Liverpool.com.
The FA was contacted by Liverpool.com, resulting in an organization spokesperson giving confirmation that Gakpo received a written warning from the soccer governing body. In the warning, the FA gave him a reminder that he can’t wear clothing or any attire that features a message of religion, citing Rule A4 of the regulations when it comes to kits and advertising.
The organization also gave confirmation that Gakpo will not be hit with any other action.
