LOU BARLETTA: Let President Trump Close The Deal

All signs point to tariff negotiations coming to close with the latest news that President Trump has secured extensive trade deals with China and the UK. In roughly a month since Liberation Day, President Trump has brought dozens of countries to the table to talk trade, and we’re nearing the endgame.

Speaking in India during his trip to meet with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi, Vice President JD Vance said, “The US and India are hard at work on a trade agreement built on shared priorities, and I’m excited to announce that we have officially finalized the Terms of Reference for our trade negotiations. This agreement is a vital step toward a final deal between our nations.” (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Plurality Of Swing Voters Support Trump’s China Tariffs, New Poll Reveals)

Meanwhile, back at home, the White House is working on deals with South Korea, Japan, and many other nations. All of these positive developments have helped build momentum towards right-sizing one of the most pernicious trade imbalances – China – with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent saying just this past weekend, “We have reached an agreement on a 90-day pause and substantially moved down the tariff levels — both sides, on the reciprocal tariffs, will move their tariffs down 115%.”

The president’s lifelong expertise in business is shining through in his leadership on this; he is delivering on his promise to restructure global trade to ultimately reshore American manufacturing, protecting our farmers, ranchers, workers, and American made products, as the United States, as a whole, has been treated unfairly for decades due to this lack of sweeping reciprocal trade agreements. The architect of The Art of the Deal will reverse this, leveling the playing field for us — and we aren’t even having to wait long.

During his broad 90-day pause on tariffs, the president is continuing to work tirelessly to hammer out details that safeguard certain aspects of American industry and shield consumers. President Trump announced that phones, computers, chips, and other electronic devices are not subject to new tariffs. It’s another way in which the president is revealing his shrewd ability to be nimble and responsive as he navigates negotiations.

Rather than let the U.S. continue to be hoodwinked, he wants to see us thrive and he wants to right-size our economy. Certainly, it’s in his DNA, as he’s been saying since the 1980s, that the American people are “tired of watching other countries ripping off the United States.”

We must trust the process, be patient, and give him the room to negotiate. Since day one back in office, and even before his return to the White House while on the campaign trail, President Trump has demonstrated strength and determination to ensure that America’s economic policies prioritize America first.

Indeed, President Trump is the leader we need at this pivotal time to strike fair trade agreements across the board. He’s going to stand up and he’s going to fight. As he has done in the past, whether it was USMCA, the US Japan Trade Agreement, the China Phase I and II deals, or others, Americans can count on this president to deliver a win that serves America’s best interest.
