Labour cannot say how many Channel people smugglers have been prosecuted since it came to power. Are you surprised?

At justice questions in the Commons just now Robert Jenrick asked Shabana Mahmood a simple one: “In the year since Labour took office, can the Justice Secretary tell us how many individuals have been prosecuted for smuggling people in on small boats?” Figure came there none…

Mahmood replied:

“Uh well, I don’t have those figures directly to hand, but I’m sure that if they are available, I can write to him with those details.”

Guido wouldn’t be so sure. When Jenrick put in a written question on the matter – essentially a parliamentary FoI request – the MoJ refused to say in an answer two days ago. The shadow justice secretary went on to attack the “pathetically low levels of prosecutions under her watch.” Mahmood – touted by some in Labour as a replacement for Reeves as Chancellor – might want to read up on how many prosecutions she has achieved. Ignorance may end up being bliss on this one…
