Sports commentator Skip Bayless’s previous distaste for the “Redskins” name appears to be softening, putting him on President Donald Trump’s side.
The Washington Commanders changed their name from “Redskins” in 2022, reacting to the national outrage over the death of George Floyd and the wave of wokeness that it brought. At the time, Bayless was on board with the change, but a recent Truth Social post from Trump seems to have him rethinking his position.
In a post last week, the president urged the “Washington ‘Whatevers’” to use their original name, saying there is “big clamoring for this.”

“The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them,” Trump explained. “Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!”
Bayless, who is not exactly the most conservative person around, put out a couple of X posts on the subject. In one, he made a strange remark about possibly being a “naively arrogant white person.”
Maybe I’m being just another naively arrogant white person, but I do miss Washington D.C.’s NFL team being called the Redskinshttps://t.co/BPDtYKmjQz

“Maybe I’m being just another naively arrogant white person, but I do miss Washington D.C.’s NFL team being called the Redskins,” he wrote, linking to his YouTube video on Trump’s comments.
In a follow-up post, he admits he liked that the Redskin’s represented the U.S. capital.
The Redskins were literally representing the capital of the United States of America, and somehow, deep down, I … liked that.

“If someone can conclusively demonstrate that a majority of tribal leaders across America are all for the return of Redskins and Indians as team nicknames, then I would be all for it,” he said in his video.
“We went through this a number of years ago back in my First Take days. Some tribal leaders would speak out pro and some would speak out con. I just don’t know. But if you showed me that a consensus were now pro, you know, I’m just hoping this will at least spark a new wave of debate,” he added.
