Bond for a Michigan McDonald’s employee was set at eight figures after her alleged response to getting sent home early involved posting a video before stabbing her manager.

“… that sh*t gonna catch up to her …”

Thursday at a McDonald’s in Eastpointe, Michigan, a suburb north of Detroit, police responded to the scene of a reported stabbing and “shot fired” incident. It was there that they found a customer detaining 26-year-old employee Afeni Muhammad after she allegedly fatally stabbed her manager “as many as 15 times” for sending her home early multiple times.

In a video posted to social media, Muhammad could be heard complaining about her 39-year-old manager Jennifer “Jamma” Harris, a single mother with six children, and ranting about “negative energy” while claiming Harris was “playing games.”

“But to get sent home two days in a row, man, and I came in on my off day to make up my time — and she still sends me home early — it’s not funny,” the suspect said. “Somebody gonna have to do something about that. It’s not funny. It’s not fair. It isn’t funny at all. So, you know, she can keep being a bully if she want to, but that sh*t is gonna catch up to her, cause it ain’t funny at all.”

Warning: Language

According to the Eastpointe Police Department, after being dismissed for the day, Muhammad had returned “armed with a knife,” attempting to conceal her identity with a mask and hood. “The employee proceed to stab the victim whom she had a prior dispute with. A customer who witnessed the assault fired a shot to stop the attack. No one was struck by the bullet. The suspect attempted to flee the scene but was detained by the witness.”

Appearing virtually for arraignment, Muhammad, who was also seen in another video seemingly brandishing a knife, pled not guilty to a charge of first-degree premeditated murder of the mother, with a potential for life in prison without parole if convicted.

“She stabbed the victim multiple times, up to possibly as many as 15 times, eventually causing her death,” Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney Sian Hengevold said during the hearing while Muhammad’s attorney Matthew. Licata argued, “She was in an extremely abusive relationship that was not only mental but physical.”

Commenting on the incident, WXYZ reported that Eastpointe Police Department Lt. Alex Holish said, “That’s unexplainable to me. Verbal disputes happen every day, and they should stay there. Verbal disputes happen, and they can mediate or talk to management later and try to settle the dispute like adults. No dispute should ever result in violence, especially homicide.”

Harris’ oldest daughter Antonia Griffin said of her mother, “She was the best mom anybody could ever ask for. My mama, she woke up every day and went to work for us, for us. My mama died trying to take care of us.”

District Court Judge Kathleen Galen set the suspect’s bond at $25 million as a “high risk for flight,” and McDonald’s owner/operator Yusef Alcodray offered a statement to WXYZ that read, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in my restaurants, and we are taking this matter extremely serious, as the safety and well-being of our employees and customers is our top priority.”

“We are fully cooperating with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation, and the restaurant will remain closed until further notice,” he added ahead of a reported reopening on Saturday.
