Former first lady Michelle Obama announced this week on her podcast that she is “now in therapy” because she is “transitioning.”
“At this phase of my life, I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning, you know. I’m 60 years old, I finished a really hard thing in my life with my family intact. I’m an empty nester — my girls are in, you know, they’ve been launched and now for the first time, as I’ve said before, every choice that I’m making is completely mine,” Obama said.
So much for Barack.
As for the “really hard thing in my life,” we are to presume she’s talking about being first lady. Turns out, being fawned over for eight long years by an adoring media was quite the sacrifice Obama had to make for her country.

“I now don’t have the excuse of, well, my kids need this or my husband needs that or the country needs that,” Obama said. “So how do I think about this next phase? And let me get some help. Let me unwind some old habits. Let me sort through some old guilt that I’ve been carrying around. Let me talk about how my relationship with my mother has affected how I think about things.”
Obama, who has an estimated net worth in the range of $75 to $100 million, went on to say that she was getting a “tune up for this next phase because I believe this is a whole another phase in life for me.”
“And I now have the wisdom to know, let me, let me go get some coaching while I’m doing it so that I’ve got other voices other than the people who know me best. I’ve got a new person that’s getting to know me and seeing me completely new and hearing all these emotions,” she concluded. “I am an advocate of it. Everybody needs to find their form of it the best way they can.”
Obama confirmed in an Instagram post that she was in therapy, suggesting there’s plenty for a licensed professional to delve into when she said, “Finally, I can say that I’m good enough. I know that might be surprising to hear, but it’s true. It’s just taken me some time — and some therapy — to believe it.”
With wild speculation about her gender and longstanding rumors around her marriage to Barack, her choice of the word “transitioning” prompted plenty of commentary.
Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
Anyone else sick of her acting like she’s been this selfless martyr her whole life and now she’s “learning” to finally start thinking about herself
