Former First Lady Michelle Obama commented on not having a son, saying he would have been a chip off the old block, in a Wednesday episode on her podcast.
Obama was commenting on raising boy children on her IMO podcast jointly run with her brother, Craig Robinson, when she made the apparent quip. Their special guest in the episode was radio personality and former rapper and actress Angela “Angie” Martinez.
Obama appealed to mothers to encourage in their sons resilience, a readiness for hurt, hardship, and disappointment, and familial and communal responsibility. “I know, I do that with my girls,” she said.
“Teach [your son] about how to deal with a traffic stop, but also teach him about how to communicate in a marriage and be a listening father and to be a compassionate neighbor and to be a voting citizen — somebody who’s going to pay attention and care about something outside of himself,” she added. “And if you’re thinking about that human, then all these choices become a little more clear about what he needs as a grown man in the world. That would be—”
“You shoulda threw [sic] a boy in the mix,” Martinez cut in.
“I would — I’m so glad I didn’t have a boy, ’cause he would’ve been a [former U.S. President] Barack Obama” Obama said, rolling her eyes and sighing in apparent mock relief, as Robinson and Martinez laughed.
“Baby Barack, he would’ve been amazing,” said Martinez.
“No,” countered Obama, “I would’ve felt for him.”
“She just borrowed our boys,” Robinson told Martinez, “she always borrowed ours.” Robinson has three sons, the Washington Examiner reported. (RELATED: ‘Little Princesses In The White House’: Michelle Obama Breaks Her Silence On Daughter’s Decision To Ditch Family Name)
The three personalities also discussed technology and male loneliness, and parenting methods, among other issues in the nearly one-hour-long episode.
Michelle Obama‘s absence from U.S. President Trump’s second inauguration fueled speculation that she and her husband might be heading for a divorce, as Barack Obama attended the ceremony without her.
Michelle Obama responded to the rumors while appearing in April on Sophia Bush’s “Work in Progress” podcast. “People couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself … they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing,” Obama said. “This couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions herself, right? But that’s what society does to us.”
She also spoke of how life after the White House afforded her more opportunities to pursue several activities that, during her time as the First Lady while simultaneously helping to raise her then-young daughters Malia and Sasha, she could not pursue.
Barack Obama also spoke of the toll of his presidential work on his marital and family life during a conversation with Hamilton College President Steven Tepper in April. “I was in a deep deficit with my wife, so I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things,” he said.
