Minnesota DFL Endorses Socialist Omar Fateh Over Incumbent Mayor Frey in Minneapolis Race [WATCH]

The Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party of Minnesota has officially endorsed State Senator Omar Fateh in his campaign for mayor of Minneapolis, bypassing sitting mayor Jacob Frey, who is also a member of the party. The endorsement was announced Saturday and marks a shift in support toward the progressive wing of the DFL.

Fateh, who currently serves in the Minnesota Senate, shared the news of the endorsement on his X account.

“I am incredibly honored to be the DFL endorsed candidate for Minneapolis Mayor,” he posted.

“This endorsement is a message that Minneapolis residents are done with broken promises, vetoes, and politics as usual. It’s a mandate to build a city that works for all of us.”

At 35, Fateh has gained prominence as part of a growing coalition of progressive Democratic politicians. Comparisons have been drawn between Fateh and New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, with both identifying as Muslim Democratic socialists and being members of the millennial generation.

Fateh made history in 2020 by becoming the first Somali-American elected to the Minnesota Senate.

He is the son of Somali immigrants and has positioned himself as a proponent of progressive reforms in the state.

His platform for the mayoral race includes raising the minimum wage, expanding access to affordable housing, and addressing what he describes as “police violence.”

The endorsement came during the DFL convention held over the weekend, where Fateh secured the party’s support over Mayor Frey.

The development sparked criticism from Frey’s campaign, which challenged the legitimacy of the process.

In a statement issued following the endorsement, Frey’s campaign spokesperson Sam Schulenberg said, “This election should be decided by the entire city rather than the small group of people who became delegates, particularly in light of the extremely flawed and irregular conduct of this convention.”

Schulenberg added that the general election would provide a broader platform for voters to weigh in.

“Voters will now have a clear choice between the records and leadership of Sen. Fateh and Mayor Frey. We look forward to taking our vision to the voters in November,” the statement concluded.

Fateh’s endorsement by the DFL positions him as the frontrunner heading into the general election, but the race is expected to be closely watched as the city continues to navigate political divisions and questions over public safety and governance.

The Minneapolis mayoral election is scheduled for November.
