‘Monitoring The Situation’ Bar Defeats The Entire Purpose Of Bars

The new “monitoring the situation” pop-up Polymarket bar coming to Washington, D.C., pretty much defeats the entire purpose of bars.

On Wednesday, the “prediction market” company announced that its new bar will be a refuge for people who want to watch the news, markets, etc., and place bets on real-world events.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, “Monitoring the situation” is internet slang for sitting at your laptop or phone, watching major global events and market moves unfold, especially during a crisis.

Though it sounds like it could be a good night, I do think it defeats the entire purpose of bars to begin with.

When you go to a bar, you want to escape life. You want to be sheltered from the world’s chaos. You want to drown your sorrows after a breakup or divorce. You want to have fun with your friends, and socialize face-to-face. You want to dance and sing karaoke. It’s all about human camaraderie.

However, a bar that is all about monitoring the situation robs the crucial escape element of bars. It doesn’t encourage socializing. It encourages you to bury you nose in your phone and do what you might normally do on any given night: doomscroll.

That being said, one little bender at this bar could be wicked fun. You’d have to go, though, during a good news cycle. The day the Iran War began would have been absolutely electric. If you’re there during a slow news cycle, that sounds like a recipe for boredom.

No, you’d want some action. Some big moves in the market. A flash crash or escalation in the war. Otherwise, you might as well just hit another bar and ignore the world.
