Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) presided over a tense hearing Wednesday as chairwoman of the House Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE), where debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports quickly turned into a shouting match between committee members.
The hearing, titled “Unfair Play: Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” focused on the growing national debate surrounding transgender biological males participating in female athletic competitions.
The issue has been a key priority for President Donald Trump and his administration, which has taken steps to oppose policies allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports.

Tensions escalated between Greene and Ranking Member Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) during an exchange over speaking time limits. Greene, asserting Stansbury had exceeded her allotted time, attempted to transfer the floor to Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI).
“The gentlelady’s time is expired,” Greene said.
Stansbury pushed back. “Madame Chair, you spoke for over a minute more than your allocated time.”
Greene responded, “You took a minute of my time, wasting my time on a nonpoint of order.”

Stansbury countered, “The clock was not running during the point of order. Time was not wasted.”
As the back-and-forth continued, Greene began banging her gavel in rapid succession to regain control of the hearing, striking it 46 times in approximately 30 seconds.
The action startled members in the room and further heightened tensions, as Democratic members voiced their objections.

Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) interjected, calling on the timekeeper to ensure fairness between parties.
“Log the time between both the Democrats and Republicans,” Lynch said. “That’s pretty basic.”
“We will consider that,” Greene replied.
Lynch immediately responded, “No, no, no, no, no, no, no! That’s not a suggestion. Those are the rules!”
Greene maintained her position, reiterating that Democrats had overrun their time.
“No, no, no, you took a minute of my time,” she said, again using the gavel. “We’re keeping equal time.”

The primary focus of the hearing centered on policy concerns surrounding fairness in women’s sports.
The subcommittee cited USA Fencing Chairman Damien Lehfeldt as an example of policies and perspectives they say harm female athletes.
Lehfeldt, who has expressed support for inclusivity in sports, previously wrote in a blog post that if his daughter lost to a transgender athlete, he hoped she would “enjoy the match.”
Greene directly addressed Lehfeldt during the hearing.
“You came here today to defeat women in their own sport,” Greene told him.
“You are a man who would tell his daughter to lose to a biological man and enjoy it!”
The Chair of USA Fencing, Damien Lehfeldt, said he hopes his daughter doesn’t care if she loses to a man, as long as everyone “enjoys the match.”
This is sick!
I will NEVER accept men beating women down in their own sports.

Democratic members of the subcommittee defended the inclusion of transgender athletes, framing the debate as a matter of civil rights and gender identity.
Republicans, however, argued that permitting biological males to compete in women’s divisions undermines fair competition and threatens the integrity of female athletics.
The hearing is the latest in a series of congressional efforts to examine the impact of transgender participation in sports, a topic that has sparked national attention and legal challenges in multiple states.
President Trump has repeatedly criticized policies that permit male-born athletes to compete in female categories and has pledged to protect women’s sports at the federal level.
As of now, the subcommittee has not proposed formal legislation tied to the issue, but members have indicated further hearings are likely in the coming months.
