Mystery man who cheered Charlie Kirk shooting now claims he was creating a ‘distraction’ to ‘save lives’

The man who was caught on camera seemingly cheering as Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was assassinated is, some say, trying to peddle every excuse in the book to explain away his strange behavior.

The man, who goes by David on X, started concocting what many believe are fake narratives right after the video of him cheering at Utah Valley University after Kirk was shot went viral.

In a tweet posted on Thursday, a day after Kirk’s assassination and murder, David said he was “mourning” Kirk’s death and that he’d be “explaining myself very soon”:

The post triggered a flurry a responses, with critics bashing him for lying and trying to distort reality, which was that David had been seen on camera as happy as a clam after Kirk’s murder.

David eventually doubled down with a video message published to X on Friday. In the video, he at least admitted to having cheered after the shooting. However, he purported to have a valid explanation for the cheering.

“My friend reacted in horror [when the shot was fired], saying Charlie had been struck,” David began. “His voice and description told me how serious it was. Based on his reaction, I believe Charlie had been gravely injured. I instinctively checked the security team’s movement, though I have no affiliation with them.”

“Realizing this situation was dangerous, I stood and shouted ‘USA’. Not as provocation, but to project strength, encourage others, and create a distraction that might help calm panic or even save lives. At that moment, no one knew whether this was a lone shooter or something coordinated,” he added.

Unfortunately for David, few people believe him — and for two primary reasons.

One, to many people, his story just doesn’t seem to make any sense.

Two, David’s record allegedly shows him to be a leftist.

“Absolute bs,” one critic wrote. “Your friend shouts ‘Charlie has been shot’ & this is your immediate reaction. This was not a ‘distraction tactic,’ this was nothing but pure evil. You are back tracking because your sick reaction is on display. No one believes this narrative you have created.”

“In a moment of bliss, you were told Charlie had been shot and you danced like a Palestinian on 09/11,” another critic wrote. “Now you’re realizing the cost of your vileness. You cannot walk this back.”

David did himself no favors by complaining earlier in the video about hearing certain chants at the event.

“The event opened with music, people throwing hats and loud exchanges from different parts of the crowd,” he’d said. “Some shouted offensive remarks directed at the LGBT community, while others made disparaging comments about the prophet of Islam. There were also cheers, boos, and offensive hand gestures — mockery.”

Again, many feel he sounds an awful lot like the left.

However, to his credit, video evidence does confirm that he did indeed yell “USA” after Kirk’s assassination.

Of course, he yelled “USA” with a gigantic smile on his face …
