A Vietnam War veteran suffered two broken legs before fatally shooting a naked trespasser who broke into a Los Angeles, California, residence Friday morning, police said.
The 79-year-old veteran, not identified, ran out of his home after the naked man broke into a female neighbor’s home, CBS LA reported, citing Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Capt. Warner Castillo. Authorities alleged that the suspect drove to the neighborhood, took off his clothes and started screaming. Castillo said the suspect seized signs before breaking into the woman’s residence.
The suspect allegedly chased the woman out of her home while the veteran came out of his residence to aid her.
“He tells the suspect to leave, warns him that he has a gun,” said Castillo. “Grabs the 79-year-old man, lifts him up and throws him on the ground.”
Although the 79-year-old veteran broke both of his legs as a result of the incident, he continued to fight the suspect, according to the LAPD officer.
“As he’s on the ground, the suspect approaches him and tries to pick him up again,” the captain said. “The 79-year-old man subsequently shoots the suspect three times.”
A neighborhood resident described the 79-year-old Vietnam veteran as a “very nice man” while speaking with KLTV.
“He is a very nice man. He is very sweet, very kind, gentle,” the resident said “To hear he shot somebody would be out of self-defense.” (RELATED: D-Day Vet Makes Surprising Career Move At 101)
Police said the 79-year-old veteran is the female victim’s landlord and she was home alone at the time of the incident.
Police said the 79-year-old veteran shot the suspect two to three times, according to FOX 11. The veteran, called “George” by the outlet, was hospitalized and received surgery.
A resident accused the suspect of trying to break into homes previously.
The Daily Caller contacted the Los Angeles Police Department, who did not immediately comment.
