Nervous Downing Street Refuses to Rule Out Further Welfare Bill U-Turns
A panicked Downing Street has refused to rule out yet more concessions to the welfare bill ahead of tomorrow’s crunch vote – with around 50 Labour MPs still digging in their heels despite Starmer’s embarrassing U-turn just days ago. At this rate, there won’t be any welfare reform left at all…
Pressed in today’s Lobby briefing on whether further changes are on the table, Starmer’s spokesman said:
“I cannot get ahead of the vote on Tuesday. Engagement will continue as it has over recent days right up until the vote.”
Despite the latest U-turn, 150,000 people will still be pushed into poverty, according to the government’s own analysis. If all opposition parties vote against the bill, just 87 Labour MPs would be needed to kill it..
